Edison District Potato Harvest Gets Under Way
Potato digging has begun in the Edison area with first shipments totaling about 115 cars, including 60 Kennebecs. Maturity regulations slowed early activity, but good weather is expected to boost field work next week. Prices opened at 5.50 to 6.00 for whites, later dropping to 4.00 as earlier crop carried No 2 quality. Picking in Shafter is not expected to start for another month.

Bomb hoax at Shafter High School thwarted by police
Shafter police stopped a bomb threat at Shafter High School on Thursday. Two juvenile suspects admitted writing the note and were turned over to authorities. Police Chief Hanley Witcher said the arrest prevented a shutdown of the school and a city Fire Department search of the building.

Robert Banks Wins Army Commendation Medal for Bravery
Specialist 4 Robert A. Banks of Shafter received the Army Commendation Medal with the V device for heroism in Vietnam. While leading a squad on a January 14 1969 reactionary force mission in Company C 2nd Battalion 22nd Infantry the unit faced a heavy enemy attack. Banks deployed his men and braved enemy fire to safeguard others.

Incorporation Driveed for North Kern Drug Abuse Council

Groundbreaking Planned for Richland District Upgrades
The Richland School District board approved a 300000 construction and remodeling program funded by a 288000 bond, with bid opening on June 2 and a groundbreaking during commencement week June 9-13. Major works include a new music building a district administration unit remodeled upper grade building and classroom cooling system installation. A special meeting May 23 will open bids for reroofing primary and upper grade schools and a proposed inservice education program for 1969-70.

Local grocer nabbed intruder after stakeout
Harvey Weinberger of La Estrella grocery store in Mexican Colony set a weeklong stakeout after three break-ins. He spotted Herbert Aburto of Shafter breaking in, turned him over to Kern County authorities, and Aburto pled guilty. The Shafter court imposed 60 days plus a suspended 120 day term, and ordered $125 restitution for damage and stolen wine.
