Residents of Kern County Union High School district will decide Wednesday whether to approve a $6,000,000 bond issue to finance building needs over ten years. The district covers Bakersfield East Bakersfield Shafter Kerrville Inyok Arvin and Bakersfield Junior College, with overcrowding worsened by war-era enrollment.
County 20 30 Club members vote on president candidates Harry Thompson and Marvin Neuman at the Wednesday meeting. Jim Albright is chosen vice president and Kenny Howell sergeant at arms. Directors named Harold Miller Cecil Rhoades Don Loe wen Arnold Kane. Jack Hill of Shafter High speaks on Kern County schools bond issue. Club supports bond and plans a Wasco Homecoming float. Cancer Drive total $42.83 announced. District Convention held at Fresno May 2 3 4 with many members attending.
The Kiwanis Club will view the complete Army Navy football game from last December, presented by the Associated Oil Co. The club holds a Wednesday noon luncheon meeting at the Cawelo Motel.
The Block S Club at Shafter High School hosts the annual Golden Gloves finals Monday May 12 at 8:00 pm in the high school gym. Referee Steve Strelich returns. finals set across six divisions with preliminary bouts this week to trim contenders.

Kern County union high school district proposes a 546000 bond to build a new cafeteria agriculture building and gym at Sh after High as part of a district wide expansion. Enrollment has surged from 3517 in 1933 34 to 11850 projected for 1956 57 with over 1400 students over capacity and 40 sub standard rooms in use. Balloting occurs at Shafter High on Wednesday May 7 with a 30 cent tax per 100 dollars assessed value for ten years.
The Shafter High School student body recently purchased a Bell and Howell sixteen millimeter camera with a magazine load. Holger Hansen, faculty sponsor, announced the purchase this week. The camera will record student body activities and serve as a living record of high school years. Students look forward to the first films being shown.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce approves backing the Shafter Baseball team as it joins Kern County league. They form a parking committee led by E. B. Stringham and H. W. Kelly, with Art Hemingson presiding in Ernest Panero’s absence during Friday’s meeting at Shafter Motel.
Shafter High School presents its annual spring concert on Wednesday May 7 at 8:00 p.m. in the gym. Ernest Graf directs band and glee club with a program including Star Spangled Banner His Honor Polonaise in A Flat and The Westerner Richards among pieces.
Harry West Charlie West Bates Dewey Harold Greene Ted Vig nolo Blake Hale and Walt Fill other participants are in Santa Barbara this week for the 15th annual Rancheros Visitadores trek. They are headquartered at Rancho Juan Y Lolita behind Santa Barbara.
Richland school teacher Norma Smith was a recent visitor at the home of Mrs. Uhlma Brown in Bakersfield, according to local society notes.
Shafter First Baptist Church hosted the twenty third annual Kern River Baptist Association meeting with delegates from Bakersfield First and Cavalry, Buttonwillow, Delano First, Fellows First, Taft First, Wasco First, and Shafter Mexican. The day opened with Moderator Rev. P K Flaming and featured sermons and evangelism discussions led by Rev. Lorenz Rev. Mayberry Rev. Kelfer Rev. Baker Rev. Wilkins and Dr. F F Austin delivering key messages and a missionary address.
The local Baptist church recorded 41 new members for the year, 18 by baptism 18 by letter and 5 by reinstatement. Expenditures exceeded $8600 with over $1000 directed to home and foreign missions. Dr Frank M Pepner of the Southern California Baptist Convention gave the evening address on Our Position In the Baptist World Today.
Newborns announced for families including Bud and Mrs Newman with Lynette Joan born April 22 at Mercy Hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Willard and Mrs Rose welcomed Linda Carol on April 27 at Cottage Hospital Oildale weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces. Roberta born April 28 to Mr and Mrs Heredia weighing 4 pounds 15 ounces. Milton and Mrs Koop welcomed a son born in Bakersfield April 30 weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces. Edgar James and Mrs James welcomed a daughter on May 2 at Cottage Hospital Oildale weighing unspecified ounces.
Mrs. Letha Brock and Miss Irene Tilley spent the weekend of April 26 in San Francisco.
Mrs. Floyd Cooper traveled south Sunday to visit her mother who is described as not very well.
Shafter's 1947 potato season begins with Brown and Bryant shed opening last Thursday and several others soon to follow. Early lots of US one spuds sell for 2.60 to 2.75 as growers expect steady demand for No 1s. Prices could stay above the government support price if off grade supplies rise and the program kicks in. Full district activity to ramp up by mid May with multiple sheds scheduled through June 2.
Shafter High School senior class sponsored a large carnival last Thursday substituting for ditch day. Profits from booths and concessions exceeded $500 with proceeds shared by clubs and the sponsoring senior class. Victor Bender led the event as senior president. Leroy Pasley won a Model T Ford prize from the Hi Y club.
John Siemens of Wasco was injured in an automobile accident at 4 00 a m Friday near Auburn. He is at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield with a cracked vertebra. Mrs Siemens escaped with minor injuries as the couple on a business trip.
William Duty was fined 150 dollars and received a 180 day suspended sentence by Judge F G Shaw on a charge of intoxication during a Monday morning appearance.
Local veterans housing at Minter Field aims to supply 400 units under a 90 10 state county plan but requires enough veteran applications from the Shafter Wasco Bakersfield area to show full occupancy from the start. Applications can be filed at the Veterans Service Center Central and Santa Fe Way in Jack Hare Inc or at the Shafter Press office.
Services for Tobe Demery who died Thursday at age 91 will be at 2 00 pm today at Wasco True Lite Baptist Church with Rev P A Bedford of Bakersfield officiating. Burial follows at Shafter Cemetery. Janzen Funeral Home in charge. Demery born in Louisiana January 14 1659 resided 18 years in California and 17 years in Wasco. Survived by widow Edith Demery three sons Himes Demery of Wasco Tell Demery and Ead Demery of Los Angeles five daughters Masadonia Creston Sallie Cayton Ivory Stow Bamma Wallace and Rosie Reese forty three grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren two brothers Henry Demery of Louisiana and Jasper Demery of Oklahoma.
Merwin Hunt came home from Cottage Hospital late last week after a several day stay to recover from a minor operation.
Wasco marks its 40th birthday with a three day homecoming May 9 to 11. The Wasco Chamber of Commerce sponsors a parade on Saturday at 10 a.m. a noon barbecue a rodeo featuring Gene Gray Dorothea Kent Allan Ross Tex Cooper Pat North Wilma Standard and the Sabitich family a street dance Saturday night via a National Barn Dance broadcast featuring Jimmy Wakely and an air show Sunday at 2 p.m. followed by a raffle of a 1947 Ford Deluxe. Tickets available in Shafter and Wasco outlets.
