Civic leaders from Kern County tour Shafter potato fields and hear officials praise Shafter long whites. The May dinner event at the club house highlights crop history, pest control, grading standards, and potential markets as 200 attendees consider the $5,000,000 Shafter harvest and future expansion.
Opening night for Shafter baseball features parades and two games. Troop 41 and junior firemen lead the parade to the ball park, where Hanson Segal and Firemen face the Exchange Club with three teams planned. The big game at 8:30 pairs the volunteer fire department against the Exchange club with a novelty first-ball moment lacking President Roosevelt.
Dedication of Rio Bravo’s first school unit occurred Friday night with a program by students and staff. Guest speakers included F. J. Schierlmann and Herbert JL Healy. about 150 attended as teachers and pupils showcased songs, skits, readings, and demonstrations.
The note claims both Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln share a birth date. It highlights two historic figures linked by this coincidence and notes the shared birthday without alleging new evidence.
Alfred J. Elliott defeated Harry Hopkins in California's 10th district with a roughly 5,000 vote plurality as returns came in. Elliott carried Tulare by a large margin and held slim leads in Kern, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties, while turnout was very light with Shafter reporting 346 votes. Sessions trailed as a write‑in candidate.
W H Hitchcock and Jake Neufeld were reelected to the Shafter Public Utility district board of directors in an election held Tuesday at the Shafter Business Men's building. Twenty three ballots were cast. The current directors are H Midgley Neufeld and Hitchcock.
The 1987 first quarter reports 40 new telephones installed with about half in business firms. A need for an additional switchboard arises and several lines on the new board to be activated this week have already been promised.
Esther Unruh became the honoree at a pre-nuptial shower at the home of Mrs. Emier and Mrs. J. Peters on a Saturday evening. Attendants and guests, including Rowen H. L. Comfort and Simon Unruh, offered gifts and shared refreshments and cake as the couple prepares for marriage.
Residents line Central avenue daily to collect mail drawing astonishment from a visiting commercial traveler. Postmaster Lois Berry reports 1084 calls at the general delivery in seven hours as congestion grows. Removal to new post office quarters in late construction should ease the crowd though a date is not set.
Funeral services for Mrs Katrina Wiens were held Sunday at the German Baptist church in Wasco with Rev Klien officiating. The body was shipped to Kinsley Kansas from Shafter. A long time friend Mrs Krause accompanied the body. She died after a stroke Friday night in her sixty fifth year. She is survived by her son David Wiens and daughter in law from Kinsley Kansas. Mr Wiens attended the services.
S. J. Segal the state forestry fire man announces it is illegal to burn trash without an incinerator and only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m During fire hazard months permits are required to burn off grass and for trash. Permits are issued here or in Bakersfield and are valid 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Violators face a misdemeanor with a $500 fine or up to six months in jail or both.
The annual election of officers of the Shafter Business Men's Association will be held at the American Legion hall at 8 o'clock this evening. All business men are urged to attend the meeting.
Myron Bodenhimer, once a Shafter resident, spent Sunday with friends in Shafter and travels east to wed. After the ceremony, the couple plans a Grand Canyon honeymoon then a drive to San Rafael, with a stop in Shafter along the way.
Residents of Richland school district are called to a mass meeting at Richland auditorium on Tuesday evening May 11 at 8 o clock to discuss severe overcrowding. Enrollment has jumped to 1115 with 24 new pupils Monday and 15 Tuesday, up 70 percent since last September. A new building between Myrick s corner and the resettlement model city may ease crowded classrooms grounds and bus congestion for students up to the fifth grade.
In a festive Cinco de Mayo celebration marking 75 years of independence from Spain the Mexican Blue Cross organized the event led by Senora Ramona C. Leon. The program featured Senorita Estella Saiz, dancers Primitivo Diaz and Leon, and more than 250 attendees enjoyed Mexican dishes before a dance to a five piece orchestra.
Three of the six proposed packing and shipping sheds for Shafter’s industrial area are nearing completion with work on the sixth shed beginning this week. All trackage and switches are in place and water connections available. Washing starts at one shed today and potato handling begins at the other two on Monday as the enlargement program in the shipping district nears completion.
Alva Preston, previously living at 4 Beach, visited T. V. Little on Sunday and announced plans to move back to Kern County to establish a business in Oildale.
The world famous Leo the Lion Cub will make a personal appearance in Shafter this Saturday. His press agent notes he will refuse to sign autographs or photos, while Gilmore Oil will distribute treats to children. Remember the day and place.
Shafter welcomes A. Peter Ohanneson who opened a law practice on the second floor of the Jake Neufeld building. He previously practiced with the Los Angeles bar for 25 years and recently arrived to invest in local land. He is brother to Phil and J. C. Ohanneson, noted ranch operators.
Shafter ships the season’s initial long white potatoes by Santa Fe rail with three carloads. Orville Mettler, a leading grower, ships two cars while a third car is washed for D. M. Wasson. All three cars belong to Bell-Sibbald of Kansas City. Onion shipments also begin rolling out, with onion harvests set to peak by week’s end.
Troop 41 of Shafter returned with high honors from the Kern Council Camporee at Besle Park. Scouts formed three patrols the Flying Eagle Blazing Arrow and Cobra as twenty five patrols from Kern county camped at the event.
