Festival chairman Ben Grundy says preparations are well underway with emphasis on the Firemen's Master and Conservation Council Fun Run. Stringham Park hosts about thirty concession booths and around thirty-five parade entries, with local groups urged to enter bands and floats.
Pacific Telephone will host a booth at the fair with modular phone system demonstrations. Free jacks for conversion to modular systems will be given. An open house will offer tours of the switching center and a splicing demonstration.
Shafter merchants at a Chamber meeting urged promotion of the Potato and Cotton Festival on May 13 and 14 with local business costumes. The 70 Years of Pioneer Progress theme calls for pre WWI attire. A large crowd is expected with 1200 pounds of deep pit barbecue, parade after a 11 am to 1 30 pm serving window. Proceeds aid Depot restoration.
SHS bus drivers from Shafter High School were honored by the Highway Patrol and KHSD Insurance Company for an outstanding driving safety record. Their 1.5 million miles without injury or a chargeable accident, plus 133 years of total driving experience, reflects the district’s pride and student cooperation.
Richland School District must offer summer school by law due to proficiency test failures. Shafter High will host 8th to 12th graders not proficient. district focus on 7th graders. Program modeled after migrant summer school with no recreation component to save costs. Proficiency lab planned. hours undecided. Board approved plan while exploring attendance to meet break-even of 22 students. One class costs 2300 dollars. state will reimburse 60 percent of revenue limit based on ADM.
Harold E. Miller longtime Jacobsen Farms office manager died Sunday May 1 in a Bakersfield hospital. A memorial service is set for May 17 1 30 p m at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel Bakersfield. He lived 38 years in Kern County was WWII Navy veteran and held many local roles including Shafter Rotary secretary Masonic Wasco Shrine Kern County Shrine Club Shafter American Legion Post 213 and AARP He served 11 years on Richland School District board and received the Silver Beaver Award. Survived by wife Rita son Robert C Miller daughter Mary E Wegis brother C Harmon Miller sister Genevieve Hodder four grandchildren.
The event features 45 World War II planes, pilots John Herlihy Howard Pardue and Bill Hane, and Julie Clark the only female in the air show. A bombing dogfight titled The Battle of Field is staged by Condor Squadron with a search and rescue unit. Sponsors include Coors Brewery via Glen Plumleigh and W.A. Thompson Inc. Funds seek museum support through posters, equipment, and beer proceeds.
