In Kern County the grasshopper threat is under control as poison mash has curbed infestations in Shafter and surrounding districts. Agricultural Commissioner Lewis Burtch reports early intervention limited damage and widespread signs of improvement across the valley.
About 13 members of the Shafter high school track squad will be entered in a San Joaquin valley small school meet slated for May 20 at Exeter. A list of the entrants will be sent shortly, White states.
Shafter Business Men's association votes to display signs in member stores warning of a 25 dollar fine for solicitors whose plans have not been approved by a secret committee. The plan requires written proposals, committee review, and non binding recommendations. Letters will inform local organizations of details while ballots will be mailed to members per bylaws.
Jane Barton a renowned home economist will lead a three day Homecraft Institute titled The Kitchen Karnival. The program covers cooking foods home maintenance and all homemaking crafts with demonstrations and discussions and uses nationally known products. Free admission gifts and recipes will be provided and participation is encouraged by local firms exhibiting wares at the clubhouse opening May 31.
Neu man Brothers reported 281 sacks per acre after one day of digging in their potato field near Shafter. The spuds are large, smooth, and uniform, a yield and size that record early field performance for the district.
Supervisor Jay Brown reports a road crew is building an eight mile Shafter to Corcoran road beyond Kern county. Two miles are under construction with plans to reach four miles before summer, creating a direct link between Shafter west side and Corcoran Hanford Fresno districts. The route will ease Highway 99 traffic and shorten travel to northern areas. An 80 foot right of way and 40 foot roadbed are in place with fills of 18 inches to two feet. Winter plans for WPA support were discussed but not approved. culvert work may come later. Construction will continue into summer but equipment may be pulled during oiling season.
A local election at the Legion hall drew 131 votes with many cast in the final two hours. Polls ran 1 to 6 pm under the supervision of Inspector Mrs E W Cram dall judge Mrs H R Janzen and clerk Mrs Katie Weigum. The entire district formed one precinct and Jake Neufeld announced results.
A. L. Pollard, formerly of Delano, named resident service man for the Southern California Gas Company to handle the Shafter district. District manager A. I. English says growth warrants a permanent service man. Pollard starts duties this week and will reside in Shafter with his family.
The National Congress of the Spanish Speaking People extends sincere thanks to all business men and residents of Shafter who assisted by sending attendees to the convention held April 28 29 and 30 in Los Angeles. The thanks came via the local pro congress committee of Shafter.
Clyde Bell was elected commander of Leslie L. Robinson Post No. 213 American Legion at a Monday evening meeting held in the Legion hall. Officers named include Walter Eckmann first vice president Albert Willard second vice president W. W. Tannahill chaplain Jack Janzen sergeant at arms and Glenn O. Nay adjutant.
Union Oil with Tide Water Associated Seaboard and Continental continues coring at 12,791 feet near Shafter. Early reports were not encouraging yet optimism grows as the well nears completion with Vedder sand initially deemed barren but better showings spark a finish effort. Drilling is led by Union crews and the four company project is watched for a productive result in a hot western territory.
Lloyd H. Paxton of the Boy Scouts of America spoke at a Maple PTA potluck and Public Schools Week program at Maple Auditorium. Awards were given to Scouts Alex Dobrennen, Arthur Penner, Wesley Balzer, Wallace Reimer, Lloyd Ratzlaff and Johnny Penner by C. Wiebe and Lester Engelson. Songs were performed by girls from Miss Letha Larson’s room.
Potatoes began moving locally as digging started on the Ben Sill and Sam Bailin ranches with the first carload leaving by rail for eastern markets. Work continues at several sheds and nearby districts as May approaches, while Shafter undertakes a WPA sidewalk project set to begin May 11 with funding and wage standards established for WPA labor.
The Shafter Spuds out-bowled Friesen's Service Tuesday evening in league play at a Bakersfield alley. Spuds players Vannatta Dalke and Howland led the team against Friesen and Peters Fi nal score 1426 to 1176.
