Surviving six days after Mt Pinos crash in 1960s
Dennis Shaffer of Lamont survived six freezing days after a light plane crash on Mt Pinos with pilot Ralph Nelms and guest Susan Janesko. Rescued by Civil Air Patrol, he spent weeks recovering in Oxnard Hospital. Shaffer described making slings from a sweater and bra, rationing food from pine nuts and marsh grass, and crafting a cedar shelter, all while watching for rescuers. A reporter notes his outlook on life shifted toward family and simplicity.
