Gossamer Condor pioneer recounts record flight and upgrades
Vernon Oldershaw described the 1977 success of the Gossamer Condor by Bryan Allen at Shafter California. The craft won the Kremer Prize for sustained, maneuverable human powered flight with a 7 minute 27.5 second ascent from Shafter Airport. He noted key weight reductions and design tweaks including wooden rivets, a light plastic bicycle chain, and lighter wheels. The team later attended the award in London where the Prince of Wales presented the prize. Maude Oldershaw became the first woman to fly a human powered aircraft. The Condor is now housed at the Smithsonian beside Amelia Earhart and the Spirit of St. Louis.
