PUC Favors Companies Over Customers in Rate Plan
The Public Utilities Commission is criticized for backing high electric rates after last year’s crisis. Edison International posted a 2001 fourth quarter profit of 2.1 billion as customers continue to bear elevated prices. The commission aims to extend the deal to PG&E, amid lawsuits over alleged billions in benefits to the parent company and asset transfers challenged by a bankruptcy judge.

California Focus on PUCs Power Ration Keeps Rates High
Public utilities commission plans to maintain high electric rates for Edison and PG&E to cover multi billion debt and questionable deals. Consumer advocate Douglas Heller decries the move calling it a taxpayer rip-off while appeals seek refunds and court review. The stance links to 1996 deregulation effects and a push to preserve service reliability amid ongoing energy crunch fallout.
