A year in the making, the Preliminary Report on Sanitary Sewer and Water Systems lauds Shafter Public Utility District for sound management. It recommends minor operational changes and a long range plan to meet growth, noting the plant's good condition and proposed disposal options amid rising effluent needs.
All persons interested in Pee Wee and Low Pee Wee ball may be selected by managers at the Commission meeting Monday April 5 at 7 p.m. in the Shafter City Council Rooms to discuss team member playing time and other playing rules.
Winners in the chess play at Richland School were announced Monday night by Greg Ohanneson the game instructor. Class A winner was Tommy Mortimore Class B Steve Arendes Class C Beth Ohanneson. Special speaker Porter Turner of Bakersfield addressed invited parents.
The Shafter Lions Club marked a March 24 gathering at Memorial Hall with 75 attendees. The club, chartered February 13, 1951 with Wasco Lions as sponsor, honored charter members led by Lowell Todd.
Pacific Telephone manager Truman Blair said Shafter and Kern County will switch to all numeral prefixes over six weeks. Subscriptions with fewer than four phones get mailed new discs, four-or-more installs receive discs, and prefixes become numerals though numbers remain the same. The change ends April 17 with new directories listing all numerals.
Commissyman Third Class Reginald C. Hight USN son of Mrs. Bessie L. Hight of Shafter California serves aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk during sea trials off the Pacific coast. The 80 000 ton ship completed an eight month overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton Washington and will return to San Diego for duty with the U S Pacific Fleet.
Al Robins, a magician, entertained children and grandchildren of members at the Rotary Club luncheon during the annual children's day meeting. The melodies' night event has moved to April 27 and will be at Granite Station, announced club president Dan Bloedsoe.
Richland trustees heard Superintendent Crawford outline Operation Headstart as a local pre school training effort funded by federal money with 10 percent local in kind support. The board also reviewed equipment lists totaling 13044 for social studies and 10360 for English under the National Defense Education Act and discussed land sale funds earmarking and repairs after a fire at the Richland office building.
Shafter High School students attended the Ag ribusiness Career Day in Bakersfield, with FFA leaders Bob Gloeckler and Keith Hamilton, plus Glen Wilsden and Ricky Hoffmann. Speakers included J Cordener Gibson of Cal Poly Pomona, Kern County Farm Bureau president Robert Smith, and Bill Duncan of S A Camp Fertilizer.
Shafter fire department and fifteen responders were dispatched to 409 West Euclid Saturday night at 8 16 for a cook stove gas leak. No property loss was reported.
Shafter High School will complete student registration for the 1965 66 year this week. Principal Arthur H. Johnson says returning students and graduates from area elementary schools will undergo counseling interviews and orientation. Harold J. Corrie assists with charting Maple School plans for counseling and registration activities.
The Shafter Art Festival at Veteran's Memorial Hall impressed with paintings by area students and adults. A blue ribbon was awarded to all entries as the Shafter Recreation Commission plans a Monday City Hall meeting to discuss new baseball training rules for Pee Wee leagues.
Laura Hare won the sweepstakes award for the adult division at the Kern County Art Council district show held at Shafter Memorial Hall. Her casein painting Grandma led the adult winners. moving on to a traveling exhibit, with Mrs Jan Kenneth nominating. Other adults included Etola Koehn with Integra te and Bernice Johnson, Lionel Rodriguez, Dottie Boyd, Nan Gorsching, and Helen Frizzell also winning blue ribbons. The high school sweepstakes went to Nieves Carrasco for The Big Top with several Richland entrants earning ribbons in lower grades and elementary divisions.
Shafter High School students prepare for campus elections on April 2 and voting on April 8 with Whig and Federalist parties nominating candidates for offices including president and vice president. Delegates caucus April 2, independents allowed, campaign assembly April 7, overseen by Dean Ray Hearon and student leaders Mark Larson and Tom Schroeter.
Nate Williams of Rosedale was the speaker at the Shafter Kiwanis Club luncheon on Wednesday March 31 describing his recent South American journey. Harlin Wilson served as program chairman and the official monthly board meeting was announced for April 1 at City Hall rooms with Lt. Gov. Vercil Wilson expected to attend.
David Hubbard, track coach at Shafter School, has resigned. Trustees announced at Thursday night meeting that his resignation was accepted with regrets.
