A Shafter resident, 33 year old Rachel May West, died March 26 after losing control of her vehicle on Norris Road near Ward Road. The California Highway Patrol states a rollover occurred and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alumni from Shafter and Wasco High Schools met at Wasco High on March 25 in a long awaited 28 to 12 clash. About 1600 fans packed the stands as Wasco took an early lead and the Tigers held on through a hard hitting fourth quarter. One Wasco player suffered a minor hamstring strain but no major injuries or incidents were reported.
Young people from Minter Field join Air Explorers to learn aeronautics and history while prepping for the Shafter Cinco De Mayo Parade. They plan a fundraiser selling solar flashlights to fund a San Diego field trip to view the Midway Carrier, and will attend the Minter Field Fly-In Pancake Breakfast on April 14. The Richland Junior High PTA hosts a Fun Run and Walk at Mannel Park Shafter on April 9 with a 1 mile run at 8am and a 3 mile or 5K walk at 9am ending back at Mannel Park. Registration is $10 per person no group rate. Proceeds support Richland JHS educational programs and students. For details call (661)340-4802.
A 35 year old inmate, Victor Rolando Mendoza of Whittier, died in his Wasco Correctional Facility cell early March 23. Ligature strangulation was ruled as the cause, autopsy shows. Investigations by Kern County DA and CDCSIU treat it as homicide. suspect unnamed, linked to a life sentence for kidnapping and rape in LA County.
