Shafter honors Jon Johnston, lifelong resident and 1956 Shafter High School graduate, as this year’s Cinco De Mayo Parade Grand Marshal. A 1963 65 Army veteran, Johnston serves on the city council and remains deeply involved in local life.

Fire at La Fonda Taqueria damages air system
A March 15 fire at La Fonda Taqueria and Mariscos 358 Central Ave Shafter damaged an air conditioning unit, electrical wiring and the roof area. Investigators from Kern County Fire Department probe the blaze. one firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated and released. No other units were harmed and the owner could not be reached for comment.
