Board of Trade fights to preserve Shafter cotton research
Kern County Board of Trade and Board of Supervisors urge the federal government to maintain the existing cotton research program at the Shafter Cotton Research Station. They warn that shifting $243000 from USDA priorities could abolish the Acala breeding program, jeopardize California’s leading crop, and hurt the San Joaquin Valley economy. The county owns the station site, leased to USDA for $1 yearly, with buildings funded by cotton growers.
