Cartnal was re elected president of the Richland School District Board by unanimous vote at the reorganizational meeting. John Dobbs proposed the motion. Don Neufeld seconded. Tom Almberg named Board Clerk and Karmen Jacobsen will join Kern Committee on School District Organization.

Three Die In Weekend Local Traffic Crash Near Shafter Wasco
A weekend crash between Shafter and Wasco killed Frank Rodriguez 49 of Bakersfield and three members of Paul Trugillo 39 of Shafter's family. The driver ran a stop sign at Merced Avenue at 11:55 am Sunday. Rodriguez faced felony drunk driving and manslaughter charges. The Trugillo victims were Hermelinda 34 Salvidore 4 Lorena 9 months.

Monument planned at Shafter Airport for Condor flight
Kern County supervisors approve a plan to raise a historical marker at Shafter Airport to honor the Gossamer Condor flight. The marker acknowledges Bryan Allen of Bakersfield piloting the man powered craft around a 1.4 mile figure eight on August 23 1977 and Dr Paul MacCready’s design that earned an 86000 prize.

Richland District adopts proficiency standards
Richland District embraces AB-65 and AB-3408 to require graduation standards in basic skills. The district will form a District Advisory Committee with active parental involvement to develop proficiency criteria for grades four through six and junior high, with early assessment starting in those ranges.
