Shafter City Council considers emergency alcohol ban ordinance
City Council introduces for first reading an emergency alcoholic beverage ordinance prohibiting drinking on streets alleys walkways public property and private lots within twenty feet outside buildings. Second reading set for April 9. public hearing held on Annexation 771 Goertzen. Council also approved May Potato and Cotton Festival events and a $161 Christmas Program payment to the Chamber.

Head-On Crash Injures Four In Shafter Area
A two-vehicle crash at Central Valley Highway and Shafter Avenue Sunday at 2 35 p m injures four people. Responders pried a door to reach victims. Dorothy E McCardle and Jean McGurk of 219 Grant were in one car, both with head and facial injuries. Albert Carrasco and Linda Trinidad of Wasco were in the other car. All four were transported to Bakersfield for treatment.

Shafter merchants plan sales and events agenda
The Shafter Merchant's Committee of the Chamber of Commerce met at Hutch's Coffee Shop on March 20 to set regular meeting dates and discuss plans for a sidewalk sale at end of April and a July moonlight sale. Considerations included entertainment, church group performances, late-shop nights, and revising blue and gold days for Wasco games. The group also eyed 12 days before Christmas performances and a weekly Business of the Week feature in the Shafter Press.

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce met at the Shafter Motel on Friday March 23. Secretary-Manager Susan Borton outlined the newsletter planned for members former members and other merchants to publicise city activities. Herb Howell proposed 40 directional signs at about 30 dollars each. Co-Chair Marvin Hansen outlined three float options with similar costs. President Mary Siemens reported on the Merchants Committee and monthly meetings set for the first Tuesday.
