Kern County TOTs stretch dollars for tourism marketing
Kern County's transient occupancy tax TOT or bed tax originated in Bakersfield in 1958. Cities levy TOT and funnel funds into general funds, not dedicated budgets, leaving discretionary revenue for communities. The Board of Trade explains how marketing is funded through a countywide program, with a modest 10 percent in unincorporated areas and 6 to 12 percent in cities, supporting regional promotion and tourism initiatives.
