Mrs Jimmie Fay Thompson Named Mrs Shafter 1956

Mrs Jimmie Fay Thompson 229 Elm street a 22 year old mother of two small boys was named Mrs Shafter of 1956 by a committee of day judges. She nosed out three contestants in a close Kern county contest judged on baking sewing and homemaking neatness. Thompson has a 21 month old son Douglas and a six month old baby David. Contenders were Mrs Clifford Weaver Mrs John Notley Jr and Mrs Ernest Ehrhardt. Thompson will compete next month against seven county finalists in Delano for the Mrs Kern county title. Emil Stoller chaired the event and awarded a silver platter to the winner.

Mrs Shafter 1956 crowned among four candidates

The judges faced a tough choice as four candidates contested Mrs Shafter 1956. Jim my Fay Thompson is congratulated. Dorothy Hale begins work from home as society editor with contact via Pioneer 6 2931. Election for city council set April 16 with eight candidates for three seats.

Richland Artists Named Finalists for District Exhibit

Lions Club Ham Shoot Near Shafter This Weekend

Shafter Lions Club will hold its annual ham shoot on March 26, three and a half miles south of Shafter on the Taft highway. The event runs from about nine in the morning until dark with trap and Lady Luck games and refreshments. Proceeds fund community projects including the Shafter Sharpshooters Jr Rifle club and Camp Fire units. Easter hams will be awarded to lucky shooters.

Open House at Scout Hall in Shafter Set for April 13

Open house will be held April 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the remodeled $22,000 Shafter Boy Scout Hall. John Revell says the building has been remodeled and cleaned up. Scouts and Camp Fire girls will host the public. building committee and scoutmasters assist only. All hall debt was paid off last month after a successful drive.

School Board Trustees Seek Re-Election in Shafter

Two elementary district trustees announce re-election bids. Greene aims for a full three-year term after two years on a five member board. Election will be held at Richland school from 7 am to 7 pm along with high school and college district races. Inspectors named Ann Raney Nellie Lassiter Catherine Wey Lorraine Christensen Marie Bender Ben Thompson will serve as judges.

Generals to Play Exeter Friday in Sequoia League

The Shafter High School Generals travel to Exeter for their SSL contest hoping to notch their first league win. They opened SSL action with a 7 5 loss to Corcoran despite eight Shafter hits and five unearned Corcoran runs. The JV won 6 5 over Corcoran, while the Taft game ended 11 11 after six innings due to darkness.

Buttonwillow Votes on New Water District Borders

Buttonwillow residents will soon decide on forming a special water district to address sanitation. Supervisors approved the boundaries after a year of study by a citizens committee, with plans to abandon the 1940 sanitation district that never functioned.

The Easter baseball tournament at Shafter High runs March 28 with a round robin format and consolation prize. Invited junior varsity teams include Taft, East Bakersfield, Bakersfield juniors, Garces, Maricopa, Corcoran, A pough, and Shafter. Games are seven innings at three high school diamonds and Richland Park. each team plays at least two games starting 9 a.m.

Partain Elected President of Shafter Ministerial Association

Rev. Roy Partain pastor of the Nazarene church was elected president of the Shafter Ministerial Association this week succeeding Rev. Waldo Wiebe. Officers include Rev. Wiebe as vice president and Rev. Melvin N. Krug as secretary treasurer. Terms run until June 1957. The group aims to speak with one voice on community church life matters.

Herman Ficken Dies at 66 in Bakersfield Hospital

Herman Ficken 66 of 283 East Lerdo highway Shafter died Wednesday night in a Bakersfield hospital after an Armstrong ambulance ride. He was the father of Mrs. Floyd Cooper of Shafter. Funeral services set for Saturday at 11 a.m. Armstrong Mortuary, burial in Shafter cemetery.

Ground Breaking Held for SWID Ten Million Water System

Wasco Irrigation District broke ground on a ten million dollar project tapping the Friant Kern canal of the Central Valley water project. The system aims to supply up to 89,000 acre feet of water for farmers and residents, with a 90 inch main pipe narrowing to 12 inches for distribution and a pressure system similar to city lines. Peters and fellow district board members were honored with a plaque by the Shafter and Wasco Chambers of Commerce for advancing the water program.

VFW Installation Planned Monday Night

High School Talent Show Winners Named at Shafter High

Baton twirler and trumpet trio led the high school division with Jim Dandies. Gerry Ohls son of Richland won elementary with a baton routine. Second and third in the high school were a singing trio and L G Flores. Flores sang Many Times while the trio performed No Not Much.

Registration Closes for Apel 12 Voting Rights
