Continental Oil reports ongoing drilling in Section 35 27 24 northwest of Shafter with depth unknown though estimates push toward 12 000 feet. Vedder and Maple wildcat zones are being tested as potential production targets in the Shafter Greeley area along an uplift near Wasco.
Clyde Simpson, released on his own recognizance May 22, 1938 after a drunken in public charge, vanished then reappeared March 15, 1941 for 15 days. He later was jailed for 30 days after stealing a spotlight from a Shafter truck, tying to prior drunk case in city court records.
Civil service openings listed at Shafter Post Office include a research chemist associate entomologist construction inspection coordinator and student nurse. John Roskam provides full information.
Herman A. Spindt head of UC placement and former Kern County high school superintendent argued before Shafter Rotary that democracy rests on small local government and education units. He warned that consolidating districts erodes local self rule and emphasized citizens must understand their rights and responsibilities under law. Eugene Ford added notes on upcoming school landscaping, new tennis courts, and enrollment projections as conditions for growth.
Superior Oil Co reports Osborn 1-2 well in Section 28 28-25 with no production figures yet. The firm expects performance similar to nearby wells as cementing finishes on Smith No 4 Section 34 at 11 360 feet. Pasadena Realty Co Nos 3 and 4 in 28-25 are underway with foundations poured. Moore No 1 between Shafter and Greeley reports 8831 feet depth.
Instruction on using a new all purpose gas mask was given at a meeting of the Shafter Volunteer Fire department at the Shafter Ranger station. The mask was purchased for the department of the city of Slater. A county forestry service signal system was also studied. Fred Stillman was welcomed as a new member of the department.
Rain yesterday at the Shafter Experiment Farm measured .37 inches. Season total to date stands at 8.59 inches as recorded by local agricultural stations.
About 20 000 cars and several thousand people attended a coronation of Kern County wildflower goddess Ralena Noe of Oildale east of Shafter. The event featured the Shafter High School band, a mayoral address, and a program with flower princesses, poems by county students, and a special song by Nevada Slim.
Tomorrow evening the annual Future Farmers of America boxing event features seven bouts including a heavyweight final between Phil Haag and Lloyd Suckut, curtain raisers, comedy bouts, and wrestling exhibitions. Referee Steve Strelich and coach Tommy Thompson lead arrangements by the Shafter FFA.
A drive for Boy Scout funds in the Shafter district will open April 3 and run for one week. Dr. Jack Lighthill and A. P. Ohnneson lead the campaign in charge.

Farm adviser Marc Lindsay notes market prices range from 2.50 to 3 per hundred for new potatoes, with New York bids around 1.75 to 1.90 per bushel. In Kern County the Shafter area eyes 30 000 acres and about five million sacks, while Edison Arvin totals 12 000 acres, with some yields slowed by cold weather and later season onset.
Herman Steele aged 25 lost his right arm in a farm machinery accident on the J. H. Maurer ranch northeast of town Monday morning. The power take off gear engaged while he worked, and he was taken to Kern General hospital by Bob Wardwell. Steele’s condition was reported as good as can be expected yesterday afternoon.
Six dairy cows from Woods Stone herd named to Kern County honor roll for February. Cows producing more than 60 pounds of butterfat are listed in the monthly report issued this week.
A coconut sent from Honolulu to Dr and Mrs M M Kay arrives Monday morning bearing the senders address stamps on its shell. The nut was sent by Mrs Alice Fisher sister of Mrs Kay.
Crews coring in oil sand at 11 408 feet Tuesday at the Crites 52 28 location in section 28 northwest Shafter field. Union Oil reports a producer likely though no forecast of potentialities. Indications show formation dropping north and west with a fault along the field edge limiting expansion.
M A Lindsay will be the featured speaker at a Shafter Farm Center banquet next Tuesday evening. Other speakers include E G Buerkle regional Farm Bureau director and H K Dickson head of the Kern County Union High School Agricultural department. Frank Stockton of Arvin will be a honored guest with musical performances by Donald Suydam and a local quartet and instrumental group.
Federal grazing lands across the western states are declared in the best condition in years to meet increased needs, with officials noting improved forage, water access, and management efforts. A meeting is planned to discuss future funding and policy adjustments.
Early Monday a fire destroyed the Twin Pepper liquor store on Central Avenue and threatened the A. R. Duehren building before Shafter volunteers and county forestry crews gained control. The blaze damaged an apartment, a machine shop, and nearby hardware items. Wasco and Bakersfield trucks assisted. Separately, reports say the Western Army Air Corps training center may move inland to the Shafter field, with Moffett Field slated for navy return and construction to begin soon as bids open, cost estimated around two million dollars and land cleared east of town.
A fire caused about 9000 dollars in total loss with 13 volunteer firefighters under Chief Dan Loewen aiding county men. The building belonged to Duehren while the stock was owned by John Vastbinder who planned to move into the Handel building in the same block after its completion.
Eleven Shafter men were scheduled to leave this morning for Los Angeles to be inducted into the United States army for a year of training. A total of 47 men were slated to depart Wasco per Selective Service Board No. 137. Names listed include John Paul Tennison, Richard Alfred Bender, Milton Reed, Dave Virgil Brooks, Leon Albert Bender, Vadon Tyler, Adam Hoehn, John Wilbertegins, Esteban Carriello, J. B. Woods, and Thomas Henry Ealey.
Workmen in a county sand pit west of Shafter uncovered further mastodon remains after previously finding a skull section and tusk. The bones were badly decomposed and had to be removed in small sections.
