Parents Learn Real Meth Effects At Community Meeting
At a Healthy Start parents meeting Edward Garcia of ACTS spoke on methamphetamine as the fastest growing abused drug. He explained how dopamine release drives a natural high and how prolonged use damages the brain’s ability to regulate it. Garcia urged home affirmations to counteract neglect and warned that exposure to absent fathers can normalize such behavior. He cited 2004 survey data showing 1.4 million meth users and 600,000 recent users, noting addiction alters the frontal brain region and impairs rational decisions. The session allowed questions as Garcia, now eight years sober, shared perspective.
