Shafter to Host AAU Pentathlon During Physical Fitness Week
Shafter marks Physical Fitness Week with an AAU pentathlon at Shafter High School stadium Saturday, March 10. Mayor Atkinson proclaims the event run by Verlé Helter, offering participation prizes, certificates, and awards for ages 6 to 18 with about 1000 participants expected from Shafter and nearby areas. Shafter Rail Yard Gets Long Steel Replacements
Santa Fe Railway crews completed a three mile yard upgrade in Shafter with 12 new switches. The 62 mile Bakersfield to Corcoran corridor will gain heavier 119 pound rails welded together to reduce noise and improve efficiency. Richland School approves pay hikes for classified staff
Richland District board grants classified personnel a 2.5 percent cost of living rise for the current term and a 2.5 percent increase on the 1970 71 salary schedule. Fringe benefits are revised, gratis health insurance is rejected, and holiday schedules are scaled back to a three week period after ten years, rising to 15 weeks.

Head Start Seeks 3 to 5 Year Olds for March Enrollment
Miss Maria Torres named head teacher at 5512 yearly 10 1/2 months. Jes Torres announces registration for children ages 3 to 5 on Saturday and Sunday March 21 22 at Boy Scout Hall Sunset and Walker. The hall is jointly owned by Shafter Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and has been renovated for Head Start use. A new chain link fence surrounds the building. Continued on page 4.

Shafter FFA to Observe 40th Anniversary on April 23
The Shafter High School Future Farmers of America plans a barbecue dinner at the SHS agriculture department on April 23 to celebrate the chapter 40th anniversary. Tickets are sold by FFA members or via call to the high school. A 1000 pound steer will be given away. charter members and former teachers will receive personal invitations along with honorary members and other agriculture enthusiasts. The FFA was chartered in January 1930 with signatories including Albery Kattenhorn, Yelton Camp, Hildra Frost, Pete Epp, and others.
