Opposition to USDA plan to close Shafter cotton program
At Visalia meeting of the Continuous Cotton Variety Testing Committee growers and industry representatives condemned the USDA proposal to end the one variety breeding program. They warned the move would halt uniform high quality cotton and remove $20 to $40 million in annual premium income, threatening CPCSD seed savings and $400,000 annual research support. The group urged reversal and sought congressional support while outlining 1978 testing plans including SJ varities and 30 experimental bales across seven sites.
