The article argues America’s epic lies in the future, not past decadence. Rem Bristow owner of the Shafter Ambulance Service and Shafter Funeral Home announces a luxury 16 cylinder Cadillac ambulance. The side-loader with long wheelbase offers more patient comfort and easier riding for emergencies and non emergency returns from hospital. Both this vehicle and the existing white ambulance will be kept, giving the service two vehicles on hand.
Over 80 cotton growers in the Shafter-Wasco area attended a banquet at Cawelo Motel hosted by S A Camp Ginning Co. U S Experimental Farm agronomist George Harrison spoke on planting methods and introduced the Acala 442 strain, urging two inch depths, earlier spacing, and pre-planting irrigation when rainfall is insufficient. Other researchers noted 83 to 95 percent mechanical pickers efficiency and reduced picking costs.
Four Shafter High School Future Farmers will enter Hereford stock at the Grand National Junior Livestock Exposition in San Francisco April 9 to 14. Everett Eyraud will display three Herefords for show purposes. Delegation plans to depart April 7 or 8 and quarter in a dormitory on the Cow Palace grounds. The auction sale is slated for April 13 with judging on April 9 and 10.

Fridirich Schnaidt Sr. longtime Shafter resident and potato grower dies at 83. Funeral services at 2 p m in the German Reformed Church with Rev. Robert Klaudt officiating. Burial in Shafter Cemetery. Arrangements by Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary. Survived by 3 sons Daniel Fridirien Jr Henry. 6 daughters Bertha Hilda Lea Paulina Magdalena Katherine. sister Katherine Janner. half brother William Schnarle. 27 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Officers of the Business & Professional Women's club announced the next meeting for Thursday evening March 17 in the Home Economics room at Shafter High School starting at seven o'clock. Miss Florence Smith named social chairman to entertain Senior high girls with Helen Holmes coordinating food.
A. W. Eckman was among many Shafter residents at a breakfast gathering held in conjunction with the Potato Growers Association meeting now in session in Bakersfield.
Monroe H. Marsh assumed duties Monday as manager of the Rasco Variety Store in Shafter succeeding R. W. Reaney. He arrives from Los Angeles where he was associated with the Rasco concern, bringing Mrs. Marsh with him.
Pfc Manuel L Casillas who earned the Bronze Star for heroism on Okinawa is to be reburied in the United States. The body has not yet arrived nor a burial site announced. His parents lived in Tehachapi with relatives in Shafter. A relative in Victorville recently received the posthumous Bronze Star citation. The letter notes Casillas on 2 June 1945 exposing himself to heavy fire, firing a light machine gun until he was killed.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club hosts an eight o'clock benefit fashion show at the Woman's Club House with Suzanne's Dress Shop presenting spring fashions. Models include Mesdames Eckman Brown Clarkin Vignolo and Neuman Peters Thompson plus pianist Mrs Frizzell. Tickets at the door are fifty cents with proceeds for the Kern County Women’s Club project aiding a young Korean woman’s year of study at Bakersfield College.
The Shafter high school PTA hosts a potluck at 6 30 p m with parents bringing dishes by class. A nominating committee will report and officers will be elected after the program. Two pictures Play Time U S A and A Criminal is Born will be shown. Clothing donations for the welfare fund are welcomed at the meeting or Mrs T P Rootes home.
Rabbi Sanford Rosen spoke to the Shafter Rotary Club at Cawelo Motel detailing Israel’s history from World War I onward and outlining a democratic system with Arab participation. He noted major diamond industry, agriculture in arid lands with bananas and grapes, and a displaced persons reception and support program.
Despite slick roads, Bakersfield artist Paralee Wohlsted presented slides interpreting children's art at the Shafter Art Association program. Exhibits from Richland schools ranged kindergarten to eighth grade, with Ben Rohfield of Wasco sharing orchid slides and national park photos. Margaret Smithberg contrasted American art today with modern trends, as a nominating committee was named for next year and a March 22 Harris oil painting demonstration announced.
The Shafter Potato Festival Committee announced a large rodeo sponsored by the Shafter 20-30 Club led by rodeo veteran Cliff McGraw. Tickets go on sale April 18 with a horse and saddle raffle and a western theme kickoff. The event includes a Kangaroo Court on Central Avenue and plans for a high school venue with 2 pm rodeo start.
Services were held yesterday afternoon for Letha Rose Holland who died at five days old. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ott Holland of near Shafter, born at Cottage Hospital Oildale on March 8. Graveside rites occurred at Shafter Cemetery with Reverend Sam Wilcoxon officiating. Survivors include her parents two sisters Carolyn Jean and Martha Lee Holland and brother Berdell Holland. Arrangements were by Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary.
