California Farm Growth Clashes With Size Shift

A California State Chamber of Commerce study released today shows the number of farms in California more than doubled over 30 years while total acreage rose less than five percent. The count rose from about 70,000 farms to 141,577 by 1945, with large holdings over 1000 acres remaining about the same in number. Small rural holdings under 175 acres surged from 49,000 in 1900 to 112,000 in 1940, making up 84 percent of farms by 1940.
