The Shafter city council approved a first reading of Ordinance No. 432 to curb domestic water use by 20 percent this summer, with penalties up to 100 dollars and flow restrictors. The measure allows future lawn watering limits during extreme shortages and outlines notice and education steps ahead of a 30 day enactment.
The AARP Board of Directors meets Wednesday March 13 at 1 30 p m at W C Walker Senior Center. A potluck luncheon March 18 at 11 30 a m in Veterans Hall with salad or dessert for A L names and main dish for N Z. Dr Dan Knapp will speak. Free food and commodities distribution by Kern County Economic Opportunity March 21 at Shafter Veterans Hall 8 a m to 3 30 p m. Bring a sack. Historical Society March 21 potluck and pieduction noted.
The 1990-1991 SHS Winter Sports Awards Banquet honored Generals football and SSL athletes with 16 letters and multiple plaques. Special awards went to Francisco Santamaria, Manuel Llamas, Jorge Idonado as Most Scholarly. Maldonado as Offensive Player of the Year. Martin Arellano as Rookie of the Year. Chad Cunningham as Defensive Player. Robert Hernandez as MVP. Lady General Soccer and wrestling honors noted. multiple MVP, Scholarly, and improved awards listed for frosh soph and JV teams.
A U S Cotton Research Station seminar on March 19 will spotlight subsurface drip irrigation for cotton. Dr. Bill DeTar notes burying drip under cotton is new and can save water while boosting yields on poor soil, with trials showing drip outperforming furrow on sandy loam pockets.
