Shafter Chamber Sees Growth Prospects and Projects

At Tuesday breakfast the Shafter Chamber of Commerce discussed growth in the city. Frank Wisner announced Gro Pak moves carrot packing to Minter Field and Neuman Brothers lease land for rose growing. Jay Atkinson noted recreation committee work and the Hudson tract baseball diamond plan. H W Pat Kelly reported progress on a 4155 square foot six sided Shafter library building nearing completion.

Gro Pak Company Moves to Minter Field Area

Gro Pak plans a May move to a 20 000 square foot building at Minter Field after signing a lease with the Board of Supervisors. Harold Crawford says 76 workers now, up to 100 during peak May 15 to August. Carrot specialist firm operates farms and contracts about 1 000 acres with 16 to 20 tons per acre yield.

Seven File For Trustees At Richland

Seven candidates filed for the Richland Board of Trustees joining three earlier entrants. On the ballot are J. C. Atkin son the incumbent Kenneth Handel Robert Merz Arthur J. Penner Fred L. Starrh John H. Turner and Phillip E. Zachary. Biographical sketches and photos of Turner and Penner appear in this issue with more to come. Incumbents Ruben Siemens and Paul Wiebe seek Maple District seats with two to be elected. Lerdo incumbents James C. Estrada and Robert Tharp filed for the two Lerdo openings. Albert S. Gould W. C. Myers and Mark G. Raney filed for Joint Union High School District board.

Bids Rejected for Bob's Market Assets in Bakersfield

All bids for the stock and fixtures of Bob's Market on East Lerdo were rejected Monday by B E Shields of Bakersfield trustee for the business. An auction of the items will be held later, piece by piece.

Easter Seal Campaign Begins At Shafter Rotary Club

Cliff Adams names Bill Hudson in charge of 40 coin containers placed in Shafter stores to raise funds for the Easter Seal Society. The piece recalls Homer Allen's 1907 birth of the movement in Elyria Ohio and its growth into the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults aiding rehabilitation and public finance for disabled children.

Robert Ogle Wounded In Jack Rabbit Hunting Accident

Robert Ogle seventeen son of Mr and Mrs Robert Ogle of 222 Manuel Avenue was wounded by a 22 caliber rifle in a hunting accident near Jerry Slough west of Wasco. The bullet entered his stomach and he underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital Bakersfield and was reported in satisfactory condition. Keith Pennington of Shafter was inside the car when the incident occurred and Patrolman Pat Campbell assisted.

Dorman Survey Report Considered By Shafter Utility Board

The Shafter Public Utility District plans a major survey by Dorman engineering of Hanford to be presented at the next board meeting. The district signed to supply water service to J E Klassen properties at 128 West Tulare 130 West Tulare and 515 Central Valley Highway with a $14.18 monthly charge.

Pop Crawford Taken to Sawtelle VA Hospital

Pop Crawford former superintendent at the Shafter Disposal plant on Burbank was rushed from his Oildale home to Kern General Hospital and then to Sawtelle VA Hospital after falling ill Thursday. He had previously been a patient at Sawtelle.

Red Cross Drive Opens in Shafter with Paul Hoffmann

Paul Hoffmann opens the annual Red Cross drive in Shafter with a $3,000 goal. He is aided by C. J. Vignolo, H. W. Pat Kelly, Wayne Wood, and William Siemens who lead advanced gifts, business, and rural areas. G. R. Landskov chairs Kern County Chapter directors.

Hildebrand named to fill council vacancy in Shafter

The Shafter City Council named Bill Hildebrand, a prominent local businessman, to fill the council term of Tony Brown who resigned. Hildebrand will take an oath before the March 22 meeting, after which a mayor and mayor pro-tem will be chosen. The council also discussed curb replacement sentiment, a uniform sign ordinance, bids for a city and public utilities district car, and maintenance needs at the fire station.
