Kern county bought 63 acres west of the Experimental Farm near Shafter for 31500 dollars in January to host a U S government potato study with the industry. Government lease not yet taken and contract talks slow, with future operation to be shared with the U S cotton farm work. The farm now runs 80 acres of mixed crops and is known for the Acala 442 cotton strain. A 40 acre section tests cotton and potatoes financed by the industries. Vote April 11.

Flash Fire Burns Woman at House in Orange Street
Mrs. Li W. Bergman of 30775 Orange Street received first and second degree burns Monday morning when a flash fire broke out as she cleaned clothes near a hot water heater. County fire officials said flames spread to the back porch and washing machine, and E. D. Carter on Beach Street kept the blaze under control with a garden hose until firemen arrived led by Capt T L Kinkaid. Mrs. Bergman was treated by a local physician.

A Shafter man Robert Bowman 31 and Lucille Jackson of Buttonwillow were killed when their car left a dead end on Corn Camp Road two miles west of Buttonwillow. Bowman was said to have been speeding as the vehicle hit an embankment. In a second incident Jo Ann Anderson 16 of Shafter sustained a possible skull injury after being struck crossing Central Valley Highway.
