Kern County Advisory Committee meets in Bakersfield

An organizational meeting of Assemblyman William M. Ketchums Kern County Advisory Committee was held last night at the Ramada Inn in Bakersfield. Twenty four members from across the Kern portion of the 29th Assembly District attended led by Chairman Fred Porter. The group discussed how to best assist Ketchum with local issues and proposed duties for each member including constituent views, reporting on local problems, and conveying industry perspectives to Ketchum.

Gianelli to Speak at Kern Water Meeting

William R. Gianelli director of the California Department of Water Resources will headline the Annual Meeting of the Water Association of Kern County on April 17. Arch Frick says the talk will cover the State Water Project status and upcoming year activity with emphasis on Kern County construction and major funding. Gianelli, a Reagan appointee and former planner for the project, is a noted expert on the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta.

Housing Authority plans 100 new homes at North Shafter camp

The Housing Authority of Kern County seeks 750000 for 3 bedroom quadruplex homes at North Shafter Labor Camp replacing shelter buildings while retaining most existing houses. Plans include converting the auditorium, financing via Farmers Home Administration loans and bonds over 40 years.

Richland Trustees Review Bids on Two Surplus Properties

The Richland District trustees report bids on two of three surplus properties. J L Board of Glennville offered 35000 for 17 acres at State Elm Pine, and Don Christensen bid 12500 for land on West Ash Valley. Gene Guenther offered 10150 for West Ash Valley Wall. No bids on Central Valley Highway parcel. The board will review bids within ten days and seek county counsel confirmation.

Mathias Backs Powell Expulsion Vote in Congress

Congressman Bob Mathias supported the expulsion of Adam Clayton Powell from the House with a 248 to 176 final vote. He called the outcome the clear will of an overwhelming majority and urged ethics code strengthening while Powell faces possible further actions.

A reader notes items from The Reader's Digest about U S government research funding. Uncle Sam reportedly spends 16 billion yearly on research as a budget staple second only to defense. NIH cited grants of over 50 000 for works like A Social History of French Medicine 1789 1815 Emergence of Political Leadership Indians in Fiji and Changing Patterns of Moslem Family Life. The Agriculture Department supported a five year project to revise pickle standards.

Richland Orchestra Plans Las Vegas Trip And Vaudeville Fundraiser

The Richland Orchestra and Richland Strings were praised as superior at the National Music Educators meeting in Bakersfield under Dick Southwick. They will raise funds with Vaudeville Varieties on March 17 at Shafter High School Auditorium, featuring student and community talents. Tickets cost 1 for adults and 50 cents for students, with sales through orchestra members and local stores.

Senior Life Saving Classes Schedules Released

Red Cross senior life saving classes are scheduled March 7 8 9 14 15 and 16 at the North of the River Pool. Additional senior classes run March 27 28 29 and April 3 4 and 5 at the California Avenue pool. All sessions run 6 30 p m to 9 p m.

Shafter High Plans Orientation for Eighth Graders

Assistant principal and director of guidance Charles Gates announced orientation and registration plans for eighth grade students for fall 1967. The first meeting is an eighth grade parent session at Buttonwillow School on March 29 at 7 30 pm. A second orientation for parents of Richland Lerdo and Rio Bravo students follows March 30.

Voth and Starrh Seek Richland Trustee Seats

Dr. Henry W. Voth and Fred L. Starrh filed for Richland District school board trustees. Voth is incumbent and president, Starrh will replace W B Camp Jr. unless a petition or write-in candidate emerges. Other districts list candidates including Ernest Siemens, Walter Parsons, Robert Tucker and Edward Cummings.
