In four months the Shafter field grows from sagebrush to a feverish drilling zone. Kernco, Superior, Union and Standard Oil spearhead massive rigs, deep tests, and new infrastructure with multiple wells pushing toward Vedder sand at roughly 11,000 feet.
California's crude output rose by 2000 barrels per day to 742 250 for the week ending February 19, according to the Oil and Gas Journal.
Murray Arnold was permanently named chief of police at the city council meeting. His pay is 150 dollars monthly plus 25 dollars for car expenses. A night officer salary is set at 125 dollars plus 25 dollars car expense, with no night officer chosen yet.
Nearly 8000 feet of storage track will be laid in the Santa Fe yards at Shafter as part of a 26 000 expansion program for the industrial and shipping center. W R Roberts of Fresno supervises with W R Johnson and Jimmy Collett assisting. about 25 trackmen will work. Completion targeted by April first will raise storage to 29 000 feet and capacity to about 650 refrigerator cars.
Bids for a new Richland district school will be opened Friday at 8 p.m. at the Richland schoolhouse by the district board of trustees. The structure is to stand on the Stone tract along Lerdo highway on land purchased by trustees last year.
Superior Oil's Wagner No 1 in Section 35 28 25 struck the Vedder sand at 11 246 feet in the Shafter oil field confirming a second producer. Casing has been landed by the crew and the string is being broken down in preparation for a production test.
Spring breezes bring kite season and the risk of injury from entanglement with power lines. Citizens are urged to follow safety rules including avoiding wires, using dry cotton cord, and not attempting to free kites from cables. If a kite is stuck, call an electric service man for release.
Funeral services were held in Reedley for Alvin Warkentine age 22 who died from a crushed skull after his tractor struck a tree near Rosedale school. He lived at Rosedale and was the son of Mr and Mrs John B Warkentine of Reedley. He was the grandson of Mr and Mrs H F Janzen and nephew of H R Janzen of Shafter.
Walter Poznoff et ux and Alexander Poznoff executed to Tidewater Associated Oil Co a lease dated December 1 1937 for one eighth royalty and five year drilling clause covering the southwest quarter of Section 34 27 25.
Ralph Lachenmaier, Shafter born pitcher, is in the San Francisco Seals rookie camp gaining publicity in San Francisco papers. Son of Mr and Mrs John Lachenmaier of Lodi, he first rose to prominence in high school pitching and helped the Sierra league team to a strong finish. He later pitched for the Victor Beavers in Lodi and joined the Modesto Helms for the Herald Examiner playoffs, impressing scouts with a submarine delivery. He awaits決 confirmation this week on making the Seals roster.
Chief of Police Murray Arnold of Shafter was elected a trustee of the Kern County Peace Officers association at a Bakersfield reorganizational meeting. Capt Roy Galyen was named president with Bert Higgins Taft as vice president and Elmer Labre McFarland as secretary treasurer.
During February prisoners at the Kern County jail borrowed 1,107 magazines books and other pamphlets. Sheriff Ed Champness reported the figure yesterday.
A large gathering of Shafter potato growers called a Tuesday afternoon meeting for March 8 at 2 o clock in the Richland grammar school auditorium. The session will discuss marketing agreements and farm bill price effects on the spud industry, with M A Lindsay presiding. Simpson of Central Marketing company Bakersfield will go to Washington DC for a potato meeting March 15–16 and will attend the local meeting.
Kern county announces revival of the county fair with the Junior Livestock show as a core event on October 1 and 2. Premiums will be awarded in Future Farmer and adult classes. a $6,000 county wide premium allotment is proposed with a 10 percent annual increase funded by legalized horse racing bets.
A large Wasco Exchangeite delegation visited Shafter on Tuesday for a formal presentation of a bell to the Shafter Exchange Club. The bell, crafted for the club, serves as a luncheon table ornament with fine tone and aids the president in maintaining order during meetings.
In 1938 Shafter wildflowers appear across the countryside with blue lupins and yellow buttercups. The best viewing spot lies east of last year’s festival site where rains favor blooms. If warm weather continues a wildflower festival may return, this year set against looming oil derricks rather than packing sheds.
Heavy rainfall across southern California triggers deadly floods and widespread disruption. Officials report about 25 believed dead with many missing as power outages persist and property damage runs into millions. Shafter sees near record rainfall. Los Angeles area cut off by floods. A missing TWA liner remains unfound as the search continues.
The Shafter Public Utility District will open bids for a trickling filter addition to the sewage disposal plant tomorrow at 3 15 P M. Bids will be reviewed at the Wallace Concrete company office.
Remodel and expansion of the Santa Fe railroad station begin soon with a new waiting room office space and painting. The project converts the current waiting room into offices, adds a separate restroom building, and installs teletype machines for outgoing and incoming messages. Western Union will move to a special office on Santa Fe way built by John Maurer.
The Farm Security Administration awarded a contract to Eser Wilhelm Ltd of Los Angeles to build 80 low rental farm labor homes in California. Forty will be near Shafter in Kern County and 40 near Indio in Riverside County, adjoining migratory labor camps. Twenty more homes were already built near Arvin, Kern County. Each home includes about one acre of land. Arvin homes are adobe. Construction is wood. Arvin homes use adobe. The project aims to raise living standards and stabilize rural migration.
The regular monthly Well Baby conference gathering occurred at the Nursery School on Friday afternoon. Mrs. J. B. Henderson and Mrs. Glenn O. Nay attended on behalf of the American Legion Auxiliary.
