Impressive Legion and Auxiliary Install Officers

An eight thirty ceremony at the American Legion saw new Legion and Auxiliary officers installed for the coming year. Dorothy Howell of Taft presided with Erma Spence and Elsie Hoeferer assisting. Legion officers named include Lee Thomas Commander and Rem Bristow 1st Vice Commander. The event drew a large audience from Taft and Wasco with music by Wilma Guenther and refreshments afterward.

Mennonite Bible School Opens with Three Sessions

The Mennonite Brethren Church starts a daily vacation bible school with three classes for all ages. Sessions run at Gospel Chapel Myrick's Park Myer's Lane June 28 to July 9, Smith's Corner Gospel Chapel Shafter Highway June 28 to July 9, and Mennonite Church July 12 to July 23. The program stresses no denominational influence and is Bible focused.

Harold Klassen Final Services Held Saturday

Harold Robert Bob Klassen born June 27 1925 in Los Angeles served as a cook in Italy and France before being fatally wounded in action. He died while on duty overseas and was laid to rest in Shafter California after a brief committal service with a quartet singing.

Three Acres of Wheat Burn Near Here

Three acres of a seventeen acre wheat stubble field burned a quarter mile north of Merced Avenue on Scaroni. The fire was reported at 6 45 p m and brought out a Shafter truck and one pumper from Wasco. Owner is C R Codd. At 6 12 a pickup rolled from the Shafter fire station to assist Bakersfield headquarters on a motorcycle fire.

Richland Aquatic Center to Close for Touchups

The Richland Aquatic Center will be closed today and tomorrow for final touchups after a weekend opening. It will reopen Thursday at 2 p.m. and will operate Thursday to Saturday with afternoon 2 to 5 p.m. and evening 6 to 9 p.m. On Sunday it will run 2 to 6 p.m. Lifeguards may begin morning instruction next Monday from 10 to 12 a.m.
