Self-Help Enterprises announces the opening of its Shafter office at the old Shafter Maytag site with director Lewis Segura in Kern County. Ten families in two groups in Shafter and McFarland aim to start building within 60 to 90 days using self help techniques to own individual homes on land purchased by each family.

Funeral Held For Victims Of Train Collision
Funeral services for Valerie Jean Barwick 24 and her infant son Jeffery Allen were held after a Santa Fe freight train struck their car at the Shafter Avenue crossing. The woman from Kern County died at the scene along with the child as the car was pushed along the tracks for about a mile before rescue efforts. The service was conducted at the First Southern Baptist Church in Shafter.

Two Firms Object to Sticker Campaign in Shafter
The Shafter City Council heard letters from the Shafter Press signed by Frank Wisner and from Schaefer's Ambulance Service signed by Jerry Schaefer objecting to Volunteer Firemen placing phone number stickers in Shafter home doors. The stickers listed numbers for fire police drug store ambulance service and a newspaper. The cards and stickers were provided free by Pacific Telephone Company as the Fire Department sought a new means of service.

Utility Board Sets Rate For Colony Sewage
The Shaf district Board will accept Mexican Colony sewage at 24 dollars per year per residence unit. Other sewage requires an individual contract and the colony connects at its own expense with district approval. The district may shut off service in emergencies and rate changes district wide will proportionally apply to the Colony.
