The California Nevada Annual Conference approved a petition to Dallas calling for removing the ban on alcohol and tobacco for ministers and laymen. Laird Parker Joins American Field Service Abroad Program
Laird Parker aged 17 of Beech avenue has been selected by the American Field Service in New York to join the Americans Abroad summer program. He leaves June 20 from San Francisco via New York with other students aboard the S S Ryndam to Oslo Norway. He will stay with Dr and Mrs Arne M Benestad and their son Yngve Erik 16. En route language training and orientation will occur during the ten day trip before continuing to live in Oslo. Parker plans to write a journal letter for the Shafter Press readers.

High of 99 Is Recorded Last Week at Station
The Shafter Cotton Research Station recorded a weekly high of 99 degrees on June 17, tying the summer heat record. Night soil temps stayed above 70 degrees. daytime temps did not reach 90. A local baseball game at 7 p.m. featured Pee Wee teams at the high school stadium with color presentation by Explorers Post under Ed Riggle. The Cottontaters quartet, in a 1919 Model T loaned by Dave Muir, performed with Bill Hildebrand, Curtis Bergman, and others. The Ministerial Association participated as did licensed operators for fireworks. a Shafter Fire Department truck backed the display. Bob Bann served as master of ceremonies.
