Shafter Fourth of July Celebration and Free Goods Distribution
Kern County Economic Co-Operative will distribute free commodities to qualified recipients Thursday from 9 a.m. until gone at Shafter Veterans Hall and 2 p.m. at 131 East First in Buttonwillow. Bring bags. Shafter Chamber promotes the annual event with a fireworks show after Boys and Girls Midget League All Star baseball games. The Shafter Methodist Band performs, and hot dogs, popcorn, and soft drinks are sold by the Recreation and Park Department. Activities start at 6 p.m. followed by fireworks.

Shafter City Council approved pre zoning for a 318.18 acre parcel for a wastewater treatment site and proceeding with annexation. The area north of Seventh Standard Road and east of Palm Avenue would be Agriculture with a Conditional Use Permit for construction. Phase I builds an outfall sewer. Phase II adds a new treatment facility. A Mitigated Negative Declaration addressed dust noise odor and landscaping.

Brakes fail cause fiery collision near Daily Delight
A pickup burst into flames after a diesel tanker slammed into it on Highway 43 Friday afternoon. The tanker carried 1,600 pounds of fuel and its brakes failed as driver George Allen pulled Cindy Bynum and her 1 1/2 year old son from the burning pickup. Bynum and her child were treated and released. Allen’s vehicle sideswiped a car before the crash. Investigation continues.
