AARP closes season with luncheon and fiddler show in Wasco
AARP Shafter Wasco Chapter 2809 wrapped up the 1983-84 season with a June 19 luncheon attended by over 100. Volunteers from the California State Old Time Fiddlers Assocation and local dancers provided music and dancing. Jason and Denise Thereste and Mary Rogers drew praise for their performances, while musicians Warren and Odessa Powers and others entertained. The meeting noted proceeds from a spaghetti dinner support local causes and a CALM donation led to a bench gift and a bronze plaque at the California Living Museum. Plans for Shafter's new Senior Center were approved, with construction set for September 1 and occupancy by March 1. Upcoming trips were announced but require sufficient signups to avoid cancellation, and a new Senior Citizen’s Service office will open July 2 in Bakersfield with a new number and address. A volunteer-training session was announced, and no meetings are scheduled until September.
