Shafter Budget Proposals Include Transit and Staffing Adds
The city advances budget plans with continued recreation funding and Shafter Shuttle transit, adds two positions funded by CETA until Oct 1 1979, and shifts a police officer from a shift to a part time dispatcher. Divers Find Body in Potato Pond During 3-Hour Search
Deputies and the Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team recovered six year old Casey Brock from a potato pond at the Mettler Potato Shed after a long daytime search on June 19. The boy, from Midville Utah, was missing since June 18 and likely drowned after wandering from the shed. Four divers participated, aided by bystanders and line restraints during the retrieval in a pond about 15 feet deep.

Shafter Fireworks Show Promises Bigger Display
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce free fireworks show will last 45 minutes with more ground displays and about 100 aerial bursts. Fire Chief Cliff Ratzlaff says the event features the Shafter Volunteer Firefighters handling detonation and Vernon Pearce as master of ceremonies. Before the fireworks, all-star games at the stadium feature National and American pee wee players and girls T ball. A City Recreation choral group, City Recreation Band, and concession booths join the program, with Color Guard by the American Legion. The event is free for Shafter residents.

Rail order eyed to ease Kern County potato glut
