Dale Nickel son of Mr and Mrs Irvin Nickel of 222 Faber has been named a winner in Time Magazine s 77th annual Current Affairs Contest. He is among top scorers with Michael Dean Linda Escalante and Chris Senn. Nickel s hobbies include golf running and pop music and he plays multiple instruments. He was a member of the Studio Band and Kern County Honor Band for seven years. His awards include the Annual Achievement Banquet Bank of America trophy in liberal arts and social sciences. He is a life member of the California Scholarship Foundation and enrolled at Occidental College with plans to study law after graduation. He set a new Shafter High cross country record and participated in varsity golf and track, and is an Honored Thespian through leading roles in school plays.

A Wasco dinner meeting promoted by the State Chamber of Commerce and the Kern County Board of Trade discussed major Kern County road plans. Highlights include a 33.3 mile corridor from the Kern River Canyon mouth to Lake Isabella and eight roads in class B and twelve in class C, with Bakersfield and Arvin seeking faster consideration.
Mayor Harvey Gaede and Councilman Ben Grundy met with the Shafter Public Utility District Board Monday afternoon to discuss mutual interests in additional garbage land and a new filing system. The district showed interest but did not commit fully.
