American industry fights back against foreign competition
The piece argues the United States faces heavy dependence on foreign oil and imports while foreign manufacturing and finance expand. It highlights Kodak's faster product cycles, Cyprus Minerals productivity gains, Navistar cuts in hours and overhead, Champion International gains from slimming, Ford's earnings from cost cuts, and a shift of funds from foreign stocks back to domestic. It cites 1987 industry leanings, mutual funds reallocating, and a surge in exports last month as signs of recovery.
