Two potential disasters were contained with little damage. At the Midgley hotel on Monday night about 15 dollars in currency was destroyed along with a shag rug and trousers after a cigarette sparked a fire in a hotel room. Firemen quickly stopped the blaze and insured property, while a Los Angeles occupant reported the loss. The second fire in North Shafter on Tuesday evening started from a kerosene stove burning wallpaper, but was put out by the tenant with buckets of water, with damages estimated at 25 dollars.

Contempt Proceedings Dismissed Over County Hospital Operation
In Bakersfield superior court late Friday, contempt proceedings against county officials were dismissed. Bakersfield doctors had sought to block the county from admitting non indigent patients to Kern General hospital and accused officials of defying a court order.

Motorcycle and Auto Collide Near Shafter Injures Rider
A head on collision four miles northwest of Shafter Sunday evening sent James Massey, 24, of Shafter, to Kern General hospital with severe injuries. Massey sustained multiple cuts and bruises and possibly fractured ribs. The other driver was Leon Rogers, 19, of Shafter. Investigating officers found no apparent reason for the crash. Massey is brother of A L Massey, connected to a prior Eckmann ranch fire that destroyed property.

Funeral services for Vera Holt set Friday
Funeral services will be held Friday morning for Mrs. Vera Holt, 48, at the Janzen Funeral Home. Internment will be in Shafter cemetery. Mrs. Holt died last Thursday night of a heart attack while visiting with her young daughter Violet. Arrangements await arrival of three sons Garwood Holt of Oakdale, Leroy Holt of Cleburn, Texas, and Orville Holt of Courtney, Missouri.

Pleads Guilty to Drunk Driving Sentenced to 90 Days
Melvin Hart pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced by Judge F E Manuel to 90 days in county jail or a $180 fine. Hart chose to serve the jail term after a wild Saturday night chase along California street Munser street and Lerdo road. Deputies arrested him after he relinquished his car at California and Santa Fe street and started another wild drive.

Standard Oil’s KCL 115 well in the Greeley field near Shafter produced 34 gravity oil at 600 barrels daily on a drill stem test this week. The field extends about a mile with three producers. KCL 11-5 at 7799 feet, 9-inch casing cemented at 7739. Sixty feet open for production as operators plan screen pipe and tubing for regular production.

USC Pharmacy Scholar Darrell Janzen Honored for Academic Merit
Darrell Janzen, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. D. Janzen, received the McKesson Western Wholesale Drug Co. annual $150 scholarship as the most outstanding second year student in USC’s pharmacy school. Faculty cited his perfect straight A record this year. He began at Shafter High, then Davis Agricultural College before transferring to USC, and is now completing a three week quiz course for the state assistant pharmacist exam.

Two Felony Counts Faced By Ollie Newton
Ollie Newton, 20, was bound over to superior court after pleading not guilty to two felony counts of alleged hit and run driving and drunken driving. Bail set at 5000 dollars. Union Oil reports KCL 1-34 on section 34 28 25 running 3 1/2 miles south of Shafter drilling below 9100 feet. Oil sand found near 8500 feet but not in commercial quantity. Reports indicate tremendous gas pressure in the hole.

Roy White Guilty On Three Counts In Grand Theft Case
Ernest Bilbrey alias Roy White was found guilty on three counts of grand theft in Visalia on Tuesday and faces sentencing Friday. White, once a Shafter resident, was linked to a string of unsolved chicken thefts and other crimes. He was previously held for investigation and later released before being re apprehended after Los Angeles police questioned him in a 1925 murder case. Kern and Tulare authorities reported sufficient evidence to proceed on the three felony charges.

Mattress Fire in Shafter Jail Ends in Injuries and Charges
Roy Curbow, 22, set a mattress aflame in the Shafter jail Sunday afternoon. He was overcome by smoke and heat and taken to Kern General Hospital. He faces charges of disturbing the peace and destroying county property after allegedly assaulting Steve Lynch with a beer bottle. A fire was discovered at 3 10 pm and jailers and S J Segal freed the unconscious man and extinguished the blaze.

Construction begins on Shafter Wasco Ginning plant
Construction of the Shafter Wasco Ginning plant began this week on land north of town beside the federal resettlement project. Cement foundations and floors will be poured this week, with all steel building erection to start next week. Local stockholders include L E Plymale president, Wm Lachenmaier secretary, and J H Fuller manager. The plant purchased a 580 stand gin from Luminus Gin of Columbus, Ohio, with factory representative Mr Grant to install within ten days. Construction should finish by August 1.

Roadster Dives Into Calloway Bridge. Injuries Reported
Three Filipinos escaped serious injury when a light roadster tore through a Lerdo road guard rail and plunged into Calloway canal. Driver Alfred Sumabat of 306 Winston Street Los Angeles said they were bound for Shafter and could not explain the crash. The car submerged with occupants forced to swim to shore as a wrecking crew retrieved it. the motor was folded and rear fenders torn.

Blakely Given Jail Term For Drinking Driving Crash
Lawrence Blakely aged 24 pleaded guilty to drunken driving and accepted responsibility for a intersection crash. Judge F E Manne imposed 30 days in county jail and ordered Blakely to pay repair costs for the damaged truck. The arresting officer was State Patrolman F R Walker after the Friday noon crash between Blakely’s machine and a truck driven by Henry Goshen near Fresno and Avenue.

Shafter High Plans Three Classroom Additions
Working plans for three new classrooms at Shafter High School include a 35 by 27 music room 28 by 29 classrooms and a biology room with microscopes work benches and wall display cases. The project cost about 18000 with bids to be let after July 1 and completion not before November 1. A central heating plant of 10000 is proposed next to the new gymnasium with future expansion in mind.
