Shafter Elects Melero After Council Board Controversy

In 1994 Shafter voters chose Melero amid a dispute with Voters For Equal Representation seeking his ouster. Five meetings defined district boundaries for the school board, with a voting method waiver not enacted. Incumbents Noel Wilson and Ralph Goehring also serve. City Council seats open Nov 5 include Don Zachary and Gary Knox. Knox is Kern County Deputy Sheriff. Zachary chairs local groups. The Clerk would not confirm dates, but mid July to mid August is expected.
