Suicidal driver leads wild chase through Kern County
A 33 year old man was arrested early Monday after a high speed pursuit that began in Shafter and rode through Wasco and Lerdo Highway. Lookadoo vowed to ram a police car and die, weaving through traffic at speeds near 100 mph. Police units from Shafter, Wasco and CHP joined the chase, culminating with a Ranchero crash into a bus barn wall near the Richland School bus yard.

Shafter Museum to Display Early Farm Equipment Donation
The Shafter Historical Society receives a sizeable donation of early Twentieth Century horse drawn implements from the McManus Oil Company era land near Panorama Heights. Volunteers including Ernie Schultz and Bill Goertzen arrange transport and storage at the Santa Fe Depot as fundraising and renovation continue. A public work day drew about 10 volunteers, with another Saturday session planned to finish the depot project ahead of the October 11 1980 opening celebration.

Shafter City Council Wireframe Budget Draft Sets Stage
The Shafter City Council discussed a preliminary proposed budget described as a rough draft by City Administrator Bill Sheldon. Public comment will be invited during the June 23 hearing as decision making begins. the plan shows no service level changes with discretionary funds about 87 thousand higher than last year amid ongoing salary negotiations with four labor groups including the Shafter Peace Officers Association and SEIU 700. The proposed total stands at 1,089,312, well below the inflation adjusted 1.2 million estimate.
