BIND City to provide rural bus transportation
The city council approved a plan to share a backup bus with the county, leased by Wide One Corporation with 69 percent city and 31 percent county funding. Wide One builds a bus for the Shafter Shuttle and will handle major power train repairs unless damage is city caused. Council also addressed a conflict of interest amendment and approved wastewater study payments. Fire activity doubled from last year with 48 calls in May.

State discus champ Bender crowns Shafter history at finals
Paul Bender of Shafter High won the state discus title at UC Berkeley, posting 192 ft 9 in 191 ft 2 in 188 ft cap 186 ft 6 in while beating Walnut’s Gary Zimmerman. He set a best mark of 196 ft 2 in in practice, qualified for Golden West in Sacramento, national meet in Chicago, and Junior Olympics, making Kern County proud as Shafter tied Tulare for seventh in team standings. Dale Ashley also qualified, finishing fourth in his heat in the 300 meter hurdles but missing the finals.
