Final plans for a two day cornerstone laying and dedication at the multimillion dollar Kern County Civic Center are announced. The ceremonies will commence at 2 PM Sunday June 21 with a Saturday program outline and public notices.
June nears as youth plans to leave the area for work and new lives. The editorial muses on graduates, brides, and farm help as harvest approaches and school ends early. A feature on local youth and future plans appears with notes on community events and upcoming page continuations.
Nikkel Iron Works hosted a tractor driving contest for youths 15 to 18 and showcased a large Massey Ferguson exhibit at Ben Grundy’s farm north of North Shafter Labor Camp. Contest runs 10 a.m. to 4 30 p.m with prizes for winners and on-site registration available. A wide display includes MF tractors, cultivators, tillers, disk harrows, plows, and related equipment from Pioneer Works.

Prizes include 100 50 and 25 for first second and third. Sponsors Johnson Neuman Hemingson Topper Men's Gore promise additional gifts.
A couple survived a watery ordeal after their car stalled on the lake. They clung to submerged trees for about a block, were rescued by fishermen who carried them to shore, and on returning home found only a single fish as a souvenir.
The University reports grant totals for the U.S. D A Cotton Experimental Station at Shafter over 11 years. Of 355 384 66 dollars presented, 272 584 66 went to salaries and machinery, while 83 000 00 was used to increase capital investments in the Station. Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce study suggests enrollment over 2000 would justify a new four year college or UC branch. The draft report, prepared for a chamber sub committee at El Tejon Hotel, projects 1964 establishment with 4236 enrollment.

An interim committee in California’s Legislature plans to study the role of family sized farms in the state economy. The panel will examine finance labor tax marketing and related issues during the 1961 session.
