The 20-30 Club leads a drive to raise 1500 for a new scoreboard at Shafter High School football field to replace the worn sign. Ed Gaede chairs the appeal, donations accepted by mail to Box 1137. Kern County trustees also awarded 31695 for flood lights and new stands at the field.

Fireworks Prohibited Under City and Kern County Ordinances

The Shafter summer recreation program reports high participation led by director Roy Farrell. Daily activities include swimming at Richland pool from 10 to 12 with 180 youths on average and 40 new swimmers after week one, plus adult lessons 9:30 to 10. Craft class at the county park 3 to 5 features lanyard bracelets and beaded jewelry guided by instructor Gage Pare with assistants Lavene and Lavelle Stoller. Playground activities run 2 to 6 daily with badminton, volleyball, croquet, ping pong, basketball and quiet games, while North Labor Camp under Chris Ummel sees 107 five-day attendance. Recreational swimming at Richland pools is 2 to 5 daily and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
