The Shafter Public Utility District discussed raw sewage use in ponds and approved routing all sewage into the settling tank before a filter. A separate sewer line to bypass the disposal plant was proposed as a long term fix. Letters will be sent to shed operators by May 1, 1966 to meet new ordinances.
The Shafter City Council discussed reducing the fire insurance rating by 96 deficiency points and planned expert input, while waiving second reading on Ordinance No. 162 codifying city ordinances. First reading on Ordinance No. 163 would rezone Richland School District's Santa Fe Tract to C2 for sale.
Bakersfield man Jack Strayer spoke at the Shafter Kiwanis Club luncheon, discussing Operations Skyhood. Krayton Bowser served as pro chairman. Division 33 plans a monthly meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Shafter Motel with Bert Ware as master of ceremonies.
Delinquent assessments for SWID due on the 21st will incur a 5 percent penalty plus one dollar. The notice warns of additional charges if payments are not received by the due date. The measure targets late settlements and outlines the exact penalty terms.

Ronald Richards 17 of Buttonwillow was killed when his car collided with a Santa Fe passenger train at a crossing near Shafter. He had been en route to attend graduation exercises for Shafter High School Class of 1965 and had recently appeared in school plays. He was taken to Mercy Hospital with fatal injuries as the train halted about a mile away. Richards was remembered as a rising actor and student with family ties to Buttonwillow and Taft, where his sister Nita Griffith accepted his diploma at the hospital.
Verlin R. Misener and Terry Maddon both of Shafter serve on the attack aircraft carrier USS Midway (CAV-41) with the U S Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. Midway operates off Viet Nam aiding South Viet Nam by air striking North Vietnamese targets and Viet Cong installations.
Maple School faculty plan summer work and vacations including math workshops in Shafter for Mrs Haag Peterson and Ratzlaff, Bakersfield studies for Mrs Loveless, language arts course for Elmer Engel, Utah trip for Mrs Heywood, and BYU enrollment for her husband. Roger Neufeld resigns to pursue ministry in Fresno with seminary study after summer.
The entire faculty with the exception of Neu feld will be back for Maple's teaching staff next year, ensuring continuity in the program.
Richland School District announces free summer recreation programs in arts and crafts. Classes run daily from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Upper grade building, led by Ray Wiley.
Trustees of the Kern County Union High School District schedule a Saturday morning session to examine the $13,127,507 tentative budget for 1965-66 at 8 o clock in the district administration building. The meeting aims to inform taxpayers and groups about budget procedures as the final budget is set for adoption June 24, with a July 27 tax election looming.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and county commissioner Vernon Smith announce a directional sign at Allen and Stockdale to guide travelers.
