The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church hosts a free Vacation Bible School June 16 to 20 from 9 am to 12 pm for children entering grades K through 6 at 400 Kern Street. Pre-register early or call 746-4969 for details.
Shafter High School Performing Arts Club closes a strong year with multiple honors. Shayann Morris earns the PEAK Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theater Scholar and directs an Anti-Bullying piece. Charlotte’s Web features, two students at the California State Thespian Conference Felishia Roel and Nick Acosta. Acosta is a PEAK acting finalist. Brianna Orozco also recognized.
Jasmine Cordova, a Shafter Youth Center volunteer and high school student, received a Volunteer of the Year Award at CAPK's 13th Annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet on May 8, 2014. Other honorees included Xiomara Cortez, Judy Coronado, Louis B. Gill, and Camping World.
The California Highway Patrol will accept online applications from July 7 to July 10, 2014, for cadet positions statewide. CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow invites diverse community members to apply to join the agency known for safety, service, and security. Visit chpcareers.com for details.
The Old Farts Car Club celebrated its 20th annual Bobby Sox and Blue Jeans Car Show at Wasco High School on June 7. The event featured Model A cars to hot rods, music evoking a bygone era, and a raffle with an engine and transmission plus $2000 cash. Proceeds benefit Wasco Scholarship Foundation Kern County Honor Flight and Kern County American Cancer Society. Club members praised as organizers for community support and memories, with plans for the 21st show next year.
