A massive parade will anchor the Shafter Potato Festival with a 2 mile route through central streets. Officials expect Kern County to witness the largest parade in its history with floats cars and mounted groups led by the parade marshal and local dignitaries along Central Avenue and Golden West.
After months of prep, the 1 Shafter State Festival features a morning parade at 10 45 from the primary school on Lerdo. The route goes east to 5 Points then Central Avenue to Santa Fe Highway, returning to town for floats awards and visitors.
Visitors at the Shafter Festival can find multiple booths run by local groups. The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary offer food in their building at the corner of James California. The Woman's Club uses its own James Sunset location. St Theresa's Altar Society operates near County Park off Central Avenue, while the Professional Women's Club also staffs a booth at James and Central. The Kiwanis Club and Women's Club each run booths on Central Avenue, one side of Pike's Garage. See See Sires will complete hso have.
The Richland Aquatic Center, built by United Swimming Pool Company of Los Angeles under engineer Dave Brown, features three pools including a 75 by 50 foot main pool with 3 meter and 1 meter diving options. Underwater lighting, black tile lanes, and green tile surround, with sun decks and advanced filtration using chlorine gas and alum ensure purity. funded by Richland School District special taxes.
The Shafter region anchors a Kern County potato industry started about twenty years ago. Shafter sheds shipped 951 rail cars totaling 342,720 sacks last week, with 107,786 sacks by truck, for 450,506 sacks that week. Peak shipments are expected this week at up to 300 carloads daily.
Local art enthusiasts attended the weekly painting class in Richland School’s art room Tuesday night led by Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Howen, Bakersfield painters. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Art Heming, Dr. H. W. Gaede and Elaine Stoller Tidwell, and several local residents.
A special five dollar cash prize will be awarded to the boy or girl under 12 years of age who brings the largest potato to Shafter. The event invites young participants to submit their entry at the designated fairgrounds.
State swimming stars headline the Potato Festival events with a 2:30 p.m. meet featuring Taft Bakersfield and East Bakersfield high schools. The 8:00 p.m. Aquacade showcases elite divers, the Aquanettes from Bakersfield College, and Navy champion Bill Finch with shows by Lorin Giggy and Jim Ryan.
