Ground Observer Corps Cake Sale This Friday

The Ground Observer corps will hold a cake sale Friday starting at 10 a.m. in front of the Safeway store. Supervisor Cathy Morgan announced the event to fund the air force show and potluck dinner on June 16.

A cash box containing about $70 was taken from the Star club cafe at Smith's corner in a break in Monday night. John D. Salyer operator of the business. Constable Blake Witcher said entry was made through a rear window.

Shafter Boy to Star in Disney Farm Harvest Film

A Shafter boy will be the sole identified child in a Walt Disney productions newsreel episode for the Mickey Mouse show. Filmed on local Kern County farms, the segment features tractors diggers and harvest equipment with the family of Tommy Davis arriving from Oklahoma five years ago.

Resurfacing Work Begins on Cross Street

Resurfacing and regrading of Cross Street started this week. Superintendent of streets Jack Harris said the project would continue likely until late next week. The crew aims to bring the street to the proper grade. Cross Street is the only street scheduled for return in the area.

Santa Fe Freight Crash Injures Local Motorist

James C. Glass, 28, a Shafter farm worker, was hospitalized in Kern General after a Wednesday collision at a Santa Fe crossing. His car struck a freight train, rolled into a ditch, and left him about 18 feet from the wreckage. Police investigate cause.

Recreation Program Starts Manly Swimming and Games

The Shafter Wascoe district lists summer activities at Mannel and North Camp with craft classes from 2 to 4 p.m. daily, playground activities 1 to 3 30 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m., and family hours 6 to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Pool hours vary by weekday and weekend. A six week course costs $5, running 7 30 to 8 p.m. for the first two weeks.

Norma Nicol Wins Top 4-H Demonstration Award

Kern County 4-H Club members demonstrated at Chowchilla on Saturday May 26 with ten San Joaquin Valley counties participating. Norma Nicol of the Maple club won the gold award and the food preparation demonstration Ace With A Hole. Lois P. Lyman and Lester E. Allen say Nicol will represent Kern County at the State Demonstration Contest in Davis at the end of August.

Escapee Edward Colvard Arrested After Camp Escape

Edward Loyd Colvard age 32 of Shafter, an escapee from the County Road Camp at Cawelo since July 1955, was captured in Buttonwillow early Monday by Deputy Jim Stroud and Constable Mer le Suarez. He is jailed in Bakersfield to await trial on the escape charge.

Gene Guenther led Memorial day services as commander of the Shafter American Legion post. Free Polio Shots Set June 18 at County Building

A vaccination clinic will be held June 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at the Shafter County Building on 336 Pacific Street Shafter. A woman born in Mississippi in 1906, long described as living with the Ter, Pond and Delano families, remains unlocated after years of residence elsewhere. Authorities seek information to confirm her current whereabouts and identity.

Funeral services were held for Nettie Louise Bradford 34 of De Woody's Camp Shafter who died June 2 in a Bakersfield hospital. Richland School eighth graders awarded graduation diplomas

On the Richland School lawn last night 198 eighth grade students received diplomas. Cosmo Thomas of the Board of Education presented them. Bruce Crawford the superintendent and D. Clay Hale the principal led the program assisted by Shirley Kent. Aides included Lois Robinson Virginia Heiser and several teachers.

Funeral Rites for Buttonwillow Man Burl Vernon McCoy

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Burl Vernon McCoy 35 of Buttonwillow who was killed June 3. Rev R D Cook of the Church of God of Porterville officiated with interment in Shafter Cemetery. McCoy was a Texas native who lived in Buttonwillow 16 years and is survived by his son David, father Gus T McCoy, brother Elmer and four sisters. Armstrong Mortuary handled arrangements.

Shafter High School Commencement Heads 121 Graduates

Shafter High School plans a commencement tonight at 8 00 p m with 121 graduates to receive diplomas. Junior class flower girls will lead the ceremony while Carol Giesbrecht chairs the event assisted by John Eckhardt. Four student speakers will discuss The World is Waiting. The program features an all senior band, songs and skits plus teacher impersonations by seniors.

Lions Club elects new officers for 1956 57

The Shafter Lions Club names Lewis Carroll president for 1956 57 succeeding Vernon Wilson. Other officers include Reg Hammond as first vice president Dave See as secretary Scott as treasurer Harry Blinkin as tail twister Tom Bushey and Lion Jamer. Board members are John Dalke and Jack Kennath. Installation scheduled June 22 in Bakersfield.
