Olsen Named Administrative Director of Instructions
Dr Neal Olsen principal of Shafter High will become Administrative Director of Instructions for Kern High School District starting July 1, after the May 31 board session. At 44 he will assist the superintendent in inservice training, coordinate over directors of athletics attendance and driver training and oversee Title IX compliance while remaining a district officer to support district schools.

Shafter Council Resists Swimmer Fee Increases
Shafter City Council on May 29 rejected a Recreation District proposal to raise summer swimming pool fees. The city will fund the pool this season while considering Step one of the Clean Water Grant. Audit firm Bailey Brennan and Davis was approved for 1978 79 at about $5000. Residents raised questions on parking lot planning and a volunteer help policy. Officer Richard Dixon urged reserve friendly employee rules and Fire Chief Cliff Ratzlaff invited a Jaws of Life demo. Police Chief Gene Kaplan backed the Hurst Tool.

Richland students lag in exit tests and retention debates
Richland eighth graders scored lower than Kern High feeder districts on reading and math tests. Four of 198 passed reading, 8 passed math. 76 read below grade level two years. Retention decisions for fourth and fifth grades sparked parental input, with calls for teacher conferences. Graduation set for June 6 at Shafter High School stadium.

SHS Graduation Set For Thursday Evening Ceremony
SHS seniors cap 13 years of schooling Thursday June 7 at 8 p.m. in the stadium. Graduates Karla Nash Don Casé Marie Roper Sharon Jones and Brenda Williams will deliver speeches after tryouts before administrators teachers and students. Jaws of Life tool donation drive for fire dept
The Shafter Fire Department seeks funds for a Hurst Rescue Tool known as the Jaws of Life, priced around 6000 to 7000 dollars. A demonstration showed it quickly freed a car occupant, taking about eight minutes, prompting plans for a June 30 breakfast fundraiser and other events aided by volunteers and the women's auxiliary.

Police report: arrests in Fastrip lot and county break-ins
Shafter police arrested Leonard Austin of Wasco for public drink and City Ordinance 264F after he waved a beer bottle in a Fastrip parking lot. Bail $250. He was found wanted on two traffic warrants. Danny Wilson was arrested in the same lot for a $300 county Sheriff's warrant on May 27. Three of four Richlands break-ins are solved, with two juvenile suspects confessing. Investigators led by Glenn Baldwin say the latest incident on May 19 appears separate, with investigation ongoing.
