Graduates Celebrated Across Shafter Schools in 1996

In Shafter and the southern San Joaquin Valley, graduation ceremonies marked the end of the 1995-96 year. Maple School held 18 diplomas with an honors banquet May 14 and a reception June 4. Richland-Lerdo School District planned 236 graduates tonight at Shafter High Stadium, followed by a dance at the Neighborhood Activities Center. District leaders discussed English Language Development, safety collaborations, and upcoming facility changes, plus new principals Rose Shannon, Manuel Gonzalez, Frances Garcia, and Rosa Romero taking posts.

Longtime RJH educator Ron Adams retires after 13 years

Ron Adams steps down at Richland Junior High closing a lengthy career in education. A Fairfield, Washington native, he began teaching in Oxnard in 1960 after moving from California, then moved into administration in Camarillo. Adams earned a master's degree from California State Northridge and later served as dean of boys and assistant principal before retiring after 13 years with Richland-Lerdo School District.

Adams steps down as Richland Junior High principal in 1983

Adams becomes principal at Richland Junior High in 1983 and plans to remain in the teaching field. His wife Joan is a principal at an elementary school in Ojai. The couple splits time between Bakersfield and Santa Paula, with Adams visiting his wife each Wednesday. He notes no immediate plans to quit teaching altogether.

Shafter Research Station advances crop systems with WICSRU work

Roy Patrick reports on the Shafter Research Station forming the Western Integrated Cropping Systems Research Unit to improve cotton production. The unit uses satellite and aircraft data with pest, irrigation, and plant data to reduce energy use and environmental impact. Funding for 1995 96 includes USDA 1.1 million and several California grants.

Summer Dalmatian play seeks young actors for 101 Dalmatians

Children from Kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to play pup pies and other role parts in a summer production of 101 Dalmatians. Rehearsals run Tuesday and Thursday mornings. For details call Cris at 746-4990.

Man gunned down in Shafter evokes family grief

Ramiro Espinoza, 29, was shot while jogging near Elizabeth and South Shafter Avenue on June 6, 1995. Despite two suspects being arrested and sentenced, his relatives criticize the justice system for a short sentence, noting Justo Guzman, 20, of Bakersfield received three years when sentenced January 16.
