Court voids Spencer marriage as first cousins under Illinois law

In Chicago Cook County Superior Court Judge Grover C Niemeyer annulled the 29 year marriage of Arthur Spencer and Mrs. Jane Spencer, ruling their union invalid under Illinois law because they are first cousins. The decision cited a 1935 will and a letter from an uncle as proof of the blood relationship, and noted the spouses lived together as man and wife despite the marriage. The Spencers, residents of Hinsdale, were domiciled in Illinois for purposes of the ruling, and maintenance obligations were also addressed.
