The summer Babe Ruth Baseball league seeks players aged 15 to 18 from Shafter Taft Buttonwillow and possibly McFarland. Tryouts are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 30 p m at Schenmann Park and Hudson Park. Eighteen players are needed and will be uniformed. Sponsored by the Shafter Lions Club.

VFW Convention Set for June 14 19 in Bakersfield
The Ninth and Twenty fourth Districts of Veterans of Foreign Wars host the 60th State VFW Convention at Civic Auditorium Bakersfield June 14 to 19 with about 3000 delegates. National Commander Howard Vander Clute and National President Vona Houtz attend. Events include joint opening session June 15 with civic welcome, Senator Alan Cranston as guest speaker, and Memorial services. A public program, awards, dinners, dance, banquet, grand march, and flag presentations are scheduled through June 18 with installation set after the business session.

Shafter City Council hears annexation and transit talks
The Shafter Council held a public hearing on Annexation approving a 10 acre territory. It recommended no more land until sewer issues are resolved. Seven candidates were named for Planning Commission seats, with Steve Richardson reappointed and Med Garcia and Alan Newman chosen. The body also approved sale of the old radio system and considered leasing a used Wide One bus for backup with a $600 monthly cost subject to maintenance cost arrangements.
