Shafter Recreation Department Launches Baseball Softball Leagues
Nearly 400 boys and girls will join summer baseball and softball in Shafter. The 13 to 16 year old Junior Baseball league opens June 9 at Shafter High with 20 30 versus American Legion and Lions Club versus 7-up. Pee Wee and Low Pee Wee leagues start earlier, with games at Shafter High and Rio Bravo venues. Girls softball begins July 45 at the Primary School with Rio Bravo facing Cal Spray and other matchups through the week.

Witcher, Shafter constable, won the judgeship defeating L. J. Woodard by 221 votes 1044 to 823 with about 70 percent turnout. The district includes Shafter Maple Rio Bravo Minter Village and Canelo. Witcher takes office January 5. Woodard served rest of year after appointment ten weeks ago.
